about Krishna Thing
Originally a traditional thangka painter, Krishna Thing has over the years combined the techniques and emblems of traditional thangka painting with a personal and contemporary expression.
Born in 1979 in the eastern terain of Nepal, Krishna started his artistic career 20 years ago in Kathmandou. After studying with thangka masters and working as an apprentice for many years, Krishna earned his living from thangka painting for 7 years before deciding on changing artistic direction.
"I felt the need to explore art as a tool for freedom of expression and to find my own style" he says before adding: " In terms of the technique needed to be a good artist, being familiar with thangka painting is very useful".
The strong influence of traditional thangka painting is reflected throughout his work by his use of specific techniques and proportions, as well as in his reapropriation of certain imageries and symbols.

“I've added blues and reds to black and white frames because life is simply so colourful.”
